The Queensland coastal town of Mackay has been chosen as the Australian destination for the 2012 World ARC, an around-the-world-cruising yacht rally.
The World ARC event starts in the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia in early January 2012 and finishes in Saint Lucia in April 2013. About 40 boats will stop in Mackay for a week for maintenance and provisioning after sailing from Vanuatu in July next year.
Mackay Marina Manager Ben Anderson said Mackay’s selection ahead of Cairns and Darwin was a coup for the city and clear evidence of Mackay’s growing international standing. “Clearly our reputation as an Australian entry port is growing, and that’s due to the quality of our customs and quarantine services and the quality of local suppliers,” Mr Anderson said.
