2011 Observer Boyne Tannum Hook Up

The Club Marine-sponsored 2011 Observer Boyne Tannum Hook Up is an annual family fishing competition held on Queens Birthday weekend at Bray Park, Boyne Island, 20km south of Gladstone on the Central Queensland Coast.

For the past 16 years, this event has grown from humble beginnings of 600 entrants and a $10,000 prize pool to the event it is today, with 4000 entrants and a prize pool worth over $280,000.

Fun was had by big and small

A total of close to 3500 keen fisherman, both young and old, rolled up to have some fun and maybe win one of the eight boats (one of which was a CruiseCraft 530 Explorer on a trailer), a Camper Trailer, or a kids mountain bike and kayak package.

Contestants’ hopes of easy conditions were dashed on the opening day, when strong winds, very rough seas and temperatures struggling to reach 13C set the scene. But the elements didn’t stop contestants, families and friends from having a great time, and the reward came on Sunday with clear blue skies.

It wasn’t all about the fishing though, with plenty of prizes to be won and star attractions, demonstrations, live music and celebrity events happening throughout the three days of the competition.

Club Marine’s Peta McCafferty was present to hand over one of the major prizes to a very happy Kelly Weaver in front of the 7000-strong crowd. Kelly took home a Quintrex 440 with 30hp Yamaha outboard, trailer, Smoothwater safety equipment and registration, all sponsored by Club Marine.

The fish of the event was a 24.5kg Spanish mackeral caught by John Flesser, and the kids did well, too, with Nathan Saunders bagging a 13.6kg Spanish mackerel, and Mason Barbera landing a 9.2kg cobia.

Overall, major sponsor Club Marine is pleased to report that the Boyne Tannum Hook Up was once again an absolute success.
