Palmerston Game Fishing Club, host of the Club Marine Insurance Barra Nationals, is gearing up for the 2014 ‘Barra Nats’, to be held from May 4 to 11 on the Northern Territory’s Daly River.
The tournament traditionally attracts a large number of entries, which last year resulted in the committee struggling to reduce the numbers to fit the 60-team limit. But despite last year’s event drawing the maximum number of teams, the wet season failed to deliver the necessary rains, with patchy showers providing insufficient fresh water for barramundi to breed in and resulting in only a handful of big fish being caught. The tournament organisers are hoping last year’s dry spell will mean an even wetter wet – and lots more fish – for 2014.
