It’s a sign that summer is on the way in New Zealand, now that Race Day 3 of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s (RNZYS) Club Marine Wednesday Series has been completed.
Taking place on Auckland Harbour on a course from Chelsea Buoy, under the Harbour Bridge, to McKenzie Buoy, off Rangitoto Lighthouse, the 11-day series runs on alternate Wednesday evenings, from October 8, 2014, to March 18, 2015, and includes a range of open spinnaker divisions, a non-spinnaker division, an open division for multihulls, and PHRF and IRC Handicap Divisions.
The fleet continues to grow with over 100 entries over 12 divisions regularly taking part in each race. With several new TP52 yachts joining, including the most recent addition Calm – replacing Vamos that has returned to Australia – the fleet now counts enough entries to make up its own division. Other One Design divisions include an MRX fleet, Young 88s, Farr 1020s and Ross 930s.
With the exception of the first race of the series, conditions for the event have been perfect. RNZYS says the Club Marine Wednesday Series remains the best reason in Auckland to get off work early and head out on the harbour for New Zealand’s best racing.
