The Northern Territory’s iconic barramundi tournament, the Club Marine Barra Nationals, is this year celebrating its 20th anniversary and is expected to be the biggest in the history of the tournament, with more than 60 teams from all over Australia vying for Champion Team bragging rights.
The week-long tournament will be held from April 19 to 26, with the five days of competition taking place on a 70km stretch of the Daly River and hosted at Banyan Farm Tourist Park.
The ‘Barra Nats’ is a catch-and-release tournament with barramundi over 40cm scoring points. Competitors photograph their catch, with the angler’s name tag and the fish on the measuring board included in the photo. Anglers will also do their best to catch an elusive metre-long barra to score a Metre Club Ring.
The tournament organisers are keeping participants in suspense by waiting for the tournament to begin before disclosing the destination of this year’s major prize, an all-expenses-paid, week-long trip to a secret location. Last year, the winners went to Sweden, taking in some fishing and a tour of the Abu Garcia factory.
