Volvo Penta TAMD75
Volvo Penta has released another diesel engine
for leisure craft, the TAMD75. The TAMD75 is a further development
on the TAMD74 and features a seven-litre engine, an improved
injection system, more efficient charged-air cooling as well
as an enhanced EDC system.
Volvo Penta also broadened the rpm interval
in which the engine produces full power, making the boat less
sensitive to an increased load and further improved the electronic
EDC engine control system to include a built-in diagnostic
system that monitors the engine continuously and warns the
operator of any faults.
Built in safety functions have also been included
to protect the engine and prevent gear change at excessively
high revs. The engine's revs are synchronized in dual installation
reducing noise and vibration.

Brightside from International Paints
International Paints has announced the release of
Brightside Polyurethane, the first topside coating to contain Teflon.
Teflon is a hard, tough surface that is not only resistant
to abrasion but is also easy to clean due to its ability to repel
dirt and chemical stains.
Brightside is a one-pack polyurethane enamel that
is quick drying and allows a sprayed on appearance to be achieved
by brush application. It is recommended for coating topsides, striping
and for areas subject to wear and tear inside and out.
Brightside is available in a range of 14 bright, high
gloss colours in 250ml (white only), 500ml, one litre and four litre.
For the decks, International Paints has released Interdeck, an easy
to apply, slip resistant coating with polyurethane resins. Over
an appropriate primer, Interdeck is easily applied to all substrates
and contains a mineral aggregate that produces a high-friction surface
with a low sheen that reduces sun glare.
It is available in four colours, chosen to coordinate
with the Brightside range. All colours are available in a one litre
size and white is available in a four litre pack.
Brightside and Interdeck replace Marinecoat and Marinecoat
Deck Paint.

Guide to Port Phillip
Parks Victoria has produced a comprehensive
and very informative guide to recreational boating on Port
Phillip.
Called Boating on the Bay the publication comes
in the form of a fold-out, semi-waterproof nautical chart
showing the Bay and the approaches to Geelong. The chart shows
the no go areas for general boating, water skiing, PWCs and
sailboards. Although, the one thing obviously missing is the
boundaries of the marine parks that will exclude all fishing
and recreational boating. Access areas and launching ramps
are well marked and the chart includes small scale insets
of popular boating access areas to the waterway such as the
Werribee and Patterson Rivers, Altona, Hobsons Bay, Yarra
River, Mornington Harbour and Rye Pier.
On the reverse is a wealth of information about
safety, speed limits, boating organisations and the dreaded
boat licensing system. Although it does not replace an official
hydrographic chart, we recommend that all skippers venturing
out on Port Phillip carry one in their boat for easy reference.

Over the last 12 months, Lowrance Australia has worked
closely with transducer manufacturer, Airmar Technology Corporation,
in the design and production of a new transducer designed to hammer
the bottom of the deep canyons along our coastline.
This transducer is available in thru-hull and transom
mount configurations and will sell for approximately $1,000 less
than similar transducers aimed at the professional market. Lowrance
claims that the sonar/transducer package amounts to a saving of
more than $2,000.
The new M260 (thru-hull) and TM260 (transom mount)
models are available with a diplexer mounted inside the housing.
It splits the 50kHz and 200kHz frequencies that are transmitted
over a single transmission line, into two separate transmission
lines. This enables the use of dedicated 50kHz and 200kHz elements
in the transducer.
Lowrance claim that the end result is performance
equivalent to 50 times the sensitivity of a single element transducer,
resulting in far superior fish and bottom detection in deep water,
including better discrimination between closely spaced fish and
between fish and bottom.

Musto Organiser
We have been looking for many years for a suitable
bag that we can keep our boat testing equipment and all the other
boating gear we need to carry where it is handy and easy to get
at.
We have tried many bags but none have been what we
were looking for, until we found Musto's organiser bag. It is just
what we wanted and obviously designed by people who understand boats
and the needs of boaties.
The soft bag is 41mm x 29mm and expands to 19mm wide.
There are four separate pockets in the front that will take a GPS,
handheld VHF radio and a calculator. The zip down flap front reveals
storage for charts and manuals, a safety clip for keys and a couple
more pockets. In the back section a change of clothes, jumper or
light wet weather jacket can be carried. There is also another zip-accessed
compartment on the outside.
We now have a flyaway bag ready to go with all our
gear easily accessed and organised. And talking about flying, the
bag is ideal for light aircraft pilots with all the room needed
for VTC and WAC charts, VFR Flying Guide, ERSAs, aircraft performance
manuals and all the other paraphernalia pilots tend to find themselves
needing to carry.
Enquiries: Musto.
