Keep an Eye on Your
Boat
Imagine switching on your boat’s air conditioning or the
fridge from home before you set out for a day on the water. Not a problem
with the Ship to Shore (STS) security monitoring system.
However, the main function of the STS is to provide a
sophisticated security monitoring system, which links with the GSM mobile
phone network. Unlike some other security systems this one has been
designed and engineered for the marine environment.
When the alarm is activated the system sends an SMS text
message to the boat owner’s mobile phone. The STS system has the
capability to detect a range of situations including unlawful entry,
theft of the vessel, flooding, fire, LPG gas leaks and onboard power
failure.
The system uses its own dedicated server so there is no
delay in transmission times. For boat owners the STS Security System
offers a whole new way of managing and protecting their boats without a
lot of hassle and expense. It also provides owners with peace of mind
knowing that when they are away from their boat they can still keep an
eye on it and take effective action if something goes wrong.

The Raymarine
revolution now out in paperback
The 2003 Raymarine catalogue has just been
released – and it makes interesting reading for both power and sailboat
owners.
Raymarine has long been recognised as the
designer/manufacturer of the world’s most innovative and reliable onboard
technology.
As pioneers of integrated autopilots and
instruments, Raymarine continues to introduce new and revolutionary
SeaTalk and hsb communication protocols. These onboard networking
technologies make PC and marine electronics convergence a reality in the
marine envioroment. And the SeaTalk Speed/Depth/ Wind and Multi-repeater
instruments have been voted Best Instruments Range by NMEA for the third
consecutive year.
The catalogue also features a new ST290 range of
instruments – smarter, larger and 20 times faster. The ST290 is another
award winner that took out the DAME award for electronics in Holland last
November.
There’s an exciting new range of high performance
stand alone products too. From pathfinder radars to plotters and
wheelpilots to marine communication systems, the range has never been
more extensive.
The Raymarine design philosophy of ‘simple on the
outside, sophisticated on the inside’ continues. This catalogue is
available through Raymarine’s exclusive Australian distributor,
Oceantalk.

Yanmar
Diesel
Yanmar has unveiled the first of its new SY-STP series
diesels at the Dusseldorf Boat Show. The 6SY-STP720 is an in-line
six-cylinder diesel with water-cooled turbocharger and two-stage
charge-air engine cooling with a displacement of 11.7 litres.
Designed for maximum power-to-weight ratio and low
emissions performance, the 6SY-STP720 has an electronic engine management
system – monitoring and processing data, such as speed, coolant
temperature and throttle setting. The system evaluates the information
continuously, adjusting conditions to ensure optimum combustion and fuel
economy.
It also features a communications area network (CAN)
protocol, enabling it to communicate with other monitoring systems. Bore
is 127mm, stroke 154mm, dry weight is 1130-1160kg and dimensions are
1039mm high, 853mm wide and 1427mm long.
The 6SY-STP720 is the first engine resulting from an
agreement between Yanmar and Scania Industrial and Marine Engines, in
which Scania blocks are being developed to Yanmar specifications.

New Accessories from QL
Volvo Penta’s QL (Quality Line) accessories range is now
being expanded to include new deckwash pumps, new and more efficient water
pressure pumps and a full range of shaft-mounted bronze propellers.
The new QL deckwash pumps use water from the waterway and
provide a full five bars of pressure, without damaging teak and other
sensitive materials. To use, attach a hose with a wash nozzle, start the
pump and hose down the decks.
There are two deckwash pump models available; the WD800 and
the WD1200, with the larger model available in 12 or 24-volt versions. They
come in a kit containing wash nozzles, hose connectors, filters, pressure
switches and check valves.
With a growing number of boats now equipped with water
pressure for kitchens, toilets, showers, QL has released a new range of
water pressure pumps with a five-chamber design that provides an even flow
and stable water pressure at outlets. The CE-certified spark-proof design
allows them to be mounted in the engine room and the pumps provide a nine,
13 or 19 litre per minute capacity, with the larger models suited to boats
with several outlets.
QL’s range of shaft-mounted bronze propellers includes right-rotating,
two, three and four-blade propellers that are produced with different
diameters and pitch. For twin-propeller boats, left-rotating four-blade
propellers are also available in selected sizes. QL bronze propellers are
made from a corrosion resistant alloy and are sand cast with a superior
finish.
