BOAT INSURANCE COVER FOR YOUR LIFESTYLE
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
The cost of boat insurance is called a ‘premium’. Your premium will depend on a number of factors and can change each year when you renew your policy.
There are many factors that determine how your premium is calculated, such as:
- Value of the boat or pleasure craft
- The type of boat or pleasure craft
- Construction materials
- The type of engine, fuel, power and maximum speed
- Where and how your boat is stored when not in use
- The level of third-party liability cover you include
- Options chosen such as water skiers liability, yacht racing, transit, lay up and excess amount
- Your risk profile
- Your claims history

Club Marine boat insurance covers accidental loss or damage to your boat, liability to other people arising from the use of the boat, and certain types of significant injury or accidental death to the person/s named on the policy. Limits and exclusions apply.
To find out more, read our Product Disclosure Statement.
This depends on national and state laws and regulations, where you use your boat, where it’s stored, whether it’s under finance and other considerations. Club Marine boat insurance covers your boat, motor(s), trailer, equipment, gear and accessories all in one policy, and helps to maximise your boating lifestyle.
This depends on your home and contents insurance policy, though it may only provide cover when your boat is stored at your home location.
Club Marine boat insurance covers your boat when it’s stored and while you’re out boating.
When you lodge a claim, we may ask for the following details to complete the lodgement:
- Policy holder details, including policy number, name and contact details
- What happened in the incident, including the location, date and time the incident occurred
- Details about the loss or damage being claimed
- Who was in control of the vessel at the time, and their date of birth
- Where the vessel is now
- Information about any other people, boats, vehicles or property involved
- Witness or Police report details
- Quotes and photos
After you lodge a claim we will:
- Acknowledge receipt of your claim within 2 business days.
- Get your claims consultant to contact you to introduce themselves.
- Request repair quotes and photos of all relevant damages for us to assess. At times we may request further information from you such as service records or proof of ownership. We may even appoint an assessor or other independent professional to assist. If we do this we’ll notify you.
- Proactively update you at least every 20 days on how your claim is progressing.
- If you need a repairer, we have a service provider locator which lists providers previously used by other members, who may be able to help you.
You can submit a claim online or by calling 1300 00 CLUB (2582).
When you make a claim, you may need to pay an excess. The following excesses may apply to your claim and will be shown on your policy schedule:
- Basic excess – this is the initial amount payable by you on a claim.
- Conditional excess – in particular instances, an additional excess may apply to your claim and will be noted on your policy schedule.
- Personal watercraft age excess – if your personal watercraft is being driven by any person under 25 years of age at the time of an incident, a $450 excess applies in addition to the basic excess on your policy schedule.
- Personal watercraft theft excess – the excess for any personal watercraft claim due to theft is $1,000. However, if your personal watercraft was on its trailer within a complex with shared parking, the excess increases to $2,000.
If your personal watercraft is fitted with an electronic anti-theft identification system or a digitally encoded security system, and is recovered undamaged following theft, the theft excess will be refunded to you.
If theft excess applies, you will not need to pay the basic excess.
- Personal watercraft water ingress excess – the excess for a personal watercraft claim due to ingress is the basic excess on your policy schedule (where there is evidence of physical impact with a solid object), or $5,000 (if there is no evidence of physical impact of a solid object).
- Nil pen excess – if your boat is stationary and in its pen/berth at a commercial marina, or your private jetty/pontoon named in your policy schedule as the usual place of storage at the time of an incident, the excess will be waived. However, your excess is still payable if the loss or damage is caused by a lightning strike, happens whilst the boat is being manoeuvred in and out of the berth, or happens during a named cyclone.
Where your boat is damaged due to a collision which is completely the fault of a third party and you can provide their required contact details and sufficient evidence, we will waive payment of any excesses.
For more information relating to excesses, please read the Product Disclosure Statement.
Lay up refers to the months you’re not using your trailerable boat or jet ski (for example in winter), and it’s stored in an enclosed garage or shed, or behind walls, gates or fences.
By adding lay up to your premium you can save up to 60% (that’s 5% for each month you nominate).
Lay up can be added when taking out a new policy, or renewing a policy, however you can't add it mid-policy.
During lay up you’re still covered for accidental loss or damage, theft or malicious damage at the storage location. Lay up also covers the boat whilst being moved to / from and whilst at a dealer or service centre for normal servicing and maintenance.
If you'd like to use your boat or jet ski during a lay up month, update your policy online, or call us on 1300 00 CLUB (2582) and pay any difference in premium.
With Market Value, the amount paid out may be less than what is shown on the schedule. That’s because the amount on the schedule represents a maximum payout, and what you will get is dependent on the actual value of the boat at the time of the loss.
With Agreed Value, the amount paid out will be based on what you agree with Club Marine – but you may need to provide evidence to confirm what you are proposing is reasonable, for example, a valuation or evidence of the purchase price.
