Wellcraft 355 Commuter boat test

Dominic Wiseman
Adventure dayboat blends European and US design influences

The Wellcraft 355 Commuter embodies a new breed of boating adventure, merging that hardcore American heritage of strength with subtle European finesse. As a new entrant to the Australian dayboat market, the 355 could set a new benchmark with more focus on adventure.

Docked at MW Marine’s Sydney marina, our test boat revealed a sleek yet robust exterior, and even a first look suggested long runs up or down the Australian coastline were a distinct possibility.

Boarding the boat, you immediately notice the attention to detail. The interior mirrors the fine craftsmanship found externally, with high-quality materials and finishes, along with an intelligent layout.

The boat is designed for owners who want to go places and get there fast while staying dry, and also wanting an opportunity to sit back, relax and enjoy wherever it is they find themselves.

The saloon is a versatile living space that’s ideal for extended trips or weekend getaways. It makes good use of the space, featuring ample storage, comfortable seating and high-quality fixtures.

A small benchtop located to the port side features a sink and plenty of storage, while an L-shaped lounge starts behind the helm seats on the starboard side and runs across the rear.

The lower level hosts an inviting north-south layout, featuring convenient sideboards with storage that flank a spacious bed. To the starboard side, you’ll find the head compartment.

Moving outside, the 355 Commuter’s bow offers a dedicated space for relaxation, with comfortable seating and panoramic views.

With sunlounges for three people and a double sofa, it’s an ideal spot for soaking up the sun or enjoying the surrounding beauty, whether anchored in a quiet cove or cruising the coastline.

The cockpit, intentionally open and wash-down friendly, provides comfort and includes features that anglers will appreciate. Watersports features in the cockpit include a tower and easy access to the water.

Our test boat sported triple 300hp Mercury V8 outboards, which is shy of the maximum power of 1050hp. The non-stepped hull by Michael Peters provides a smooth and comfortable ride even in challenging conditions.

A cruising speed of 30 knots (55.6km/h) is achieved at 4300rpm, burning 130lt/h. Top speed us 45 knots (83.3km/h), consuming 270lt/h.

The helm station also highlights Wellcraft’s well-executed design expertise. Controls are conveniently placed, ensuring command of the vessel in all conditions. Exceptional visibility from the helm comes courtesy of the expansive windshield.

The Wellcraft 355 Commuter will suit those seeking a luxurious retreat and an adventurous journey on the water. It’s not just a vessel for transport, it’s an unforgettable journey.
