Looking upon four decades of filming and fishing around the world, Al McGlashan has witnessed many awe-inspiring natural events through the camera lens.
His new documentary Fish Forever, proudly supported by Club Marine, showcases the plight of the world’s oceans and fisheries – but rather than focusing on the doom and gloom, it’s a story of hope and about working together to protect the oceans and their inhabitants.
“If we don’t understand something, how can we attempt to protect it?” says Al. “By sharing our journey and capturing the true beauty of the marine world, we hope to inspire everyone to appreciate it and to want to protect it for the future.”
Through his lifetime of adventures, Al has witnessed the undeniable changes our oceans are experiencing and the impact these changes have on our fisheries.
“The waters I’m fishing today have completely changed since I was a kid and some natural events I had experienced have disappeared … possibly forever,” said Al.
Fish Forever is a journey of discovery as Al, his partner Audi Croft and son Cooper ‘Coops’ McGlashan experience the highs and lows of deploying satellite tags into some of the biggest fish in the sea for research purposes.
This seven-part observational docuseries captures spectacular vision in some of Australia’s most amazing locations – from kingfish migrating right into suburban Sydney waters, to pursuing yellowfin on the high seas and even probing the depths of vast canyons for elusive broadbill swordfish.
It’s a race against time to help unlock the secrets of the ocean’s most valuable fish and as Al, Auds and Coops discover, the mission is anything but easy as they battle big seas, fend off attacking fish and deal with technical failures – and they do it all out of a trailerboat with Mahi, their dolphin-crazy dog.
The odds may be stacked against this trio but the spectacles they witness and their successes, no matter how hard fought, are helping science unlock the secrets of the oceans, making it all worthwhile.
Fish Forever premiers on Channel Nine on Sunday March 17, 2024, at 1pm.
