How to tie a double uni knot with Al McGlashan

How-to-tie-a-uni-knot

The double uni knot is a must-know for every angler, particularly those using light tackle for species like Bream, Bass, Trout and Flathead.

While knots like the FG knot are incredibly strong, they can be difficult to tie on the water. In this tutorial, Al McGlashan shows you why the double uni is his "go-to" for its sheer speed and simplicity. It creates a slim profile that casts easily through rod guides and, most importantly, gets you back in the water in seconds.

When it comes to fishing, braid has revolutionised the way we fish. With low stretch, it's dynamite for everything from lure fishing to deep dropping. But with low abrasion resistance, you still need a mono leader in most cases -in fact, all cases and for a lot of anglers, joining your mono onto your braid can be a real issue. On heavier tackle, the FG knot is amazing, but there is another knot that's really simple and it's really easy to do.

The double uni knot is the basic knot that works really well, and it's really good for light tackle. So to start with, I'm going to show you on these nice big bright cords so you get to see it and understand it, and then I'm going to tie it on light tackle so you can see it in the actual application.

So we've all seen the uni knot - of course, you watch the Club Marine one - but to do a double uni, take two lines. So imagine this is your braid and this is your mono. Put the two together. Make a loop in the braid and then simply wrap the tag around the main line through the loop: one, two, three. And then what I like to do is pull down on it just so it's semi-tight.

Now, this is the great thing. So it's just a uni knot and, of course, as it says, you double it. So you make a loop in your mono and then you wrap it round. Now the key with the mono is you don't have to wrap it as many times as the braid. So just one, two, maybe a quick three for good luck, and pull tight on that one.

So now you've got them sitting there and all we do is simply pull them together and as you pull tight, they'll lock in. The beauty of this knot is that it's super fast, and for light tackle, it's only a tiny little bump there so it's easy for casting and, most importantly, it's quick. The only thing left to do is just trim the tags. And there you have one of the best simple knots that's quick and easy, and gets you back in the fish.

Righto, so now we've seen it with some heavy string, I'm going to show you a real-time application because we're about to go fishing and we're using six-pound braid and a 16lb leader. Leader against the main line - I like to start with the braid. So first thing we do is make a loop in the braid, pin that with your thumb and forefinger, and then wrap the tag around the main line and through the braid loop. And you do this probably five or six times as opposed to mono, which you don't have to do as many. There's no set amount, but for me, let's do eight times.

Then grab the tag, holding the braid main line, and pull it down. It will slide down into position-don't need to pull super tight. Now pin that knot, make a loop in the mono, and pin it against the main line so the loop's there. Pin the mono against the main line with a loop and then get the tag and run it around the main line and through the loop. It's exactly the same as a uni knot, hence the name "double uni." Three times, four times for good luck. Grab it with your teeth and just pull down.

Now, braid you don't have to lubricate, but mono you do. So pull them down to there. Once you've got heavy leaders, you can't cast this through many rods, so it's really designed to be a quick knot for light leaders for everything from trout to bream, bass to cod.

The only thing left to do is just trim the tags, which of course you trim right up close. Leaving it on the tailgate so I can put it in the bin later on. Trim the mono first, nice and close, and then the braid. Of course, remember: make sure you cut the right one! And if anyone tells you that they've never made a mistake, they're lying - we've all cut the wrong one and there you have one of the best simple knots that's quick and easy, that you can re-tie after snagging or breaking off or if you need to replace a leader. Super fast, gets you back in the fish. Now, the only thing left to do is to go fishing!

There's a king right there! Splash right there, right in front of you Gord, just there. Here we go! Yeah! That's how you do it. Look, Mo's excited! Look at that, a beautiful little king. How good is it when it comes together like that? Oh, spectacular.
