Cobalt R8 Surf bowrider boat test

By Jeff Webster

With a specially designed vee-hull, up to 430hp of inboard might, and technology designed to shape the perfect wake, Cobalt’s R8 Surf is a wave rider’s dream boat.

Crafted by luxury US fibreglass sportsboat manufacturer Cobalt, the R8 Surf tops their range of four surf-making bowrider boats that stretch from 7.2m through to 8.48m (23.6 to 27.8ft) overall.

Manufactured with Kevlar-reinforced hulls, fibreglass stringers, and high-quality fixtures and fittings, they all utilise Surf Gate technology, pioneered by parent company Malibu to customise waves for wakeboarding and surfing.

This works, in part, thanks to the boat’s Surf Gate – a pair of vertical tabs or plates located on the transom that re-direct the water flow coming off the bottom and sides of the hull to create rideable surfing waves.

Six hard ballast tanks can be filled or emptied at the press of a button, adding as much as 1043kg of displacement. One of two Garmin multifunction displays at the helm is devoted to shaping the wake, allowing you to choose and set individual surfing modes for different riders aboard.

When it comes to power, the R8 Surf offers a handful of options, starting with the Malibu-developed Monsoon inboard petrol engine in either 360hp or 430hp, paired with a MerCruiser Bravo 4S forward-facing drive. Alternatively, you can opt for Volvo Penta power, climbing from 350hp to the maximum-rated 430hp Volvo V8 petrol inboard, teamed with Volvo’s DuoProp forward drive.

Safety-wise, the forward-facing drive layout is ideal for wakesurfing as the twin counter-rotating propellers are mounted at the front of the drive leg (under the transom). This allows riders to play closely behind the boat, and for swimmers to board with a higher degree of safety than on a sterndrive boat with regular aft-mounted props.

On the smooth waters of the Gold Coast Broadwater, our top speed hit 41.5 knots (76.8km/h), but getting there was half the fun. The R8 Surf was quick to accelerate from idle and very responsive to the throttle, handling beautifully in the conditions thanks to its terrific vee-monohull shape and power steering.

At speed, it carved sharply and easily through tight turns and figure-eight manoeuvres, abilities you’d expect from a tow sportsboat.

These high-performance features may not be prerequisites for wakeboarding or surfing, but the Cobalt R8 has been designed for so much more. It would easily adapt to less adrenalin-spiked adventures.

At nearly 8.5m long and 2.59m wide, the R8 Surf packs in seating and move-around space for at least 12 people, with a vast amount of storage space for toys and equipment.

Moulded, L-shaped lounge seats wrap around the engine box aft, converting to a large sunpad and hiding additional storage areas. The same high-quality upholstered lounges draw boaters through to the bow and, opposite the pedestal helm chair, the co-pilot seat boasts a reversible backrest.

While the R8 Surf can be trailered in Australia, bear in mind that it is over-width so may require permits and flags in your particular state or territory.

The starboard helm console is car-like in its layout, form and function. A bolstered pedestal helm chair faces a low-set dash and fascia panel that accommodates the usual instruments and switches, plus optional dual Garmin multifunction displays.

A robust centre-opening toughened glass windshield protects the helm. Equally sturdy is the overhead electric-folding towing arch which incorporates the bimini top, optional Harman Kardon speakers, and LED interior accent/ambience lighting.

As a premium quality sports boat and entertainer, the Cobalt R8 Surf is a pretty special piece of kit for wakeboarding and surfing. It’s exceptionally well crafted, good-looking, great fun to drive, safe and sure-footed on the water.
