Sea-Doo RXP-X 325 RS personal watercraft test

Mark Rothfield

When you feel the need to get from A to B by sea, in a rush, the new Sea-Doo RXP-X 325 RS should be your conveyance of choice.

Rendered in red, it looks fast standing still. The real magic happens inside, though, with the 1.6lt Rotax ACE engine emitting a class-leading 325hp.

Engage launch control and the RXP-X 325 can rocket from 0-100km/h in 3.4 seconds. That’s V8 Supercar quick. Porsche 911 GT3 quick. Top speed is 120km/h (64.8 knots), although the maximum I saw on test was 101km/h (54.5 knots) at 7500 rpm as the motor’s internal fun police govern the performance during run-in.

Intimidating as it sounds, the Sea-Doo isn’t some manic hypercar that wants to veer into a guardrail. They’ve used the high-performance, fibreglass T3-R hull that, in my view, tracks more predictably than the ST3 hull.

The steering has rider-adjustable hydraulic dampening. Trim control also improves handling by raising the bow for speed or lowering it for take-off. The single seat and cowling are sculptured with knee wells to lock your thighs.

Slowing down is equally impressive thanks to an intelligent braking lever on the left handgrip, which also allows toggling between forward, neutral and reverse.

The power upgrade over the previous 300hp engine was achieved with a redesigned supercharger that spins at 100,000 rpm. Engine revs have been upped from 8000 to 8250 rpm, which meant bolstering the valve train. The air intake and cooling system were also revised.

Honestly, this is about as much fun as you can have sitting down, Fast the RXP-X 325 RS may be, but furious it’s not.
