Landing a large cobia aboard Sea-Doo’s 2026 FishPro Sport.
When Sea-Doo first released the FishPro Sport, it didn’t just refine a personal watercraft – it redefined the rules for what a jet ski can do in fishing terms. Recently, off Coffs Harbour NSW, I put that thinking to the test and landed a 17kg cobia.
The popular model is built around BRP’s Rotax 1630 ACE engine, delivering 170 horsepower. That’s ideal for a PWC which, by nature, has to optimise range over top-end performance.
Paired with Sea-Doo’s intelligent throttle control and a Trolling Mode offering three preset speeds, it gives anglers a stable, agile platform that can crawl through a baitball or rip across open water.
High speed trolling with the Fishpro Sport
I needed that versatility as I was running Nomad DTX Minnows hard and fast; the kind of high-speed trolling that asks a lot of any boat. Most skis would struggle at that pace with lines out but the FishPro Sport tracked straight, holding the lures in the strike zone wave after wave.
Then the rod buckled. Twenty minutes later, a thick-shouldered cobia was alongside and I was very glad I had the extended rear platform. It provides room to brace, gaff and gather yourself without feeling like you’re about to fall in.
Do you need a larger cooler?
The FishPro Sport comes with a 50lt LinQ fishing cooler that’s fine for a stringer of snapper or a few mackerel fillets. A 17kg cobia? Less perfect.
I spent the ride home looking like I’d kidnapped a small dolphin, with half the fish in the cooler and half draped over the deck. Note to Sea-Doo – please consider a “Cobia Edition” with a larger cooler.
Angler features include five rod holders, a Garmin Echomap 7-inch fishfinder with side- and down-imaging, an angler toolkit, and Bluetooth audio. The iBR braking system makes pulling up for a hook-up effortless.
